Ninesprings Country Park, a gem in the heart of Yeovil, is loved for its lakes, waterfalls, and woodlands that turn golden each autumn. Walking paths wind along streams and ponds, reflecting the season’s brilliant colours, and are accessible for all fitness levels. The park is part of Yeovil Country Park, offering a perfect mix of scenic routes, picnic spots, and benches.


Tip: Start at the Yeovil Country Park car park for a circular lakeside route.

2. Sherborne Castle and Gardens


A short drive from Yeovil, Sherborne Castle combines historical charm with natural beauty. Surrounded by gardens designed by Capability Brown, the castle grounds transform into a canvas of orange, red, and gold each autumn. Tip: After your walk, visit the garden centre next door to enjoy fabulous displays. The gardens are dog-friendly, so bring along your furry friend.

Situated near the Dorset-Wiltshire border, this National Trust property features a lake encircled by classical architecture, temples, and vibrant autumn foliage. The famous Temple of Apollo and Palladian Bridge are especially striking against the season’s hues.


Tip: Arrive early to enjoy the main lake path, a manageable two-mile loop, with fewer crowds.

4. Hooke Woods, Beaminster


For those seeking solitude, Hooke Woods offers a tranquil, secluded setting near Beaminster. These ancient woods boast towering beech, oak, and birch trees that create a dense autumn canopy. The forest’s earthy scent and abundance of fungi add to its natural charm, making it an ideal retreat for quiet contemplation.


Tip: Wear sturdy footwear, as trails can be muddy. Pack a thermos to enjoy a warm drink in a quiet spot.

5. Wayford Woods, Crewkerne


Wayford Woods, near Crewkerne, is a hidden gem with a magical atmosphere in autumn. Known for its winding paths, quaint bridges, and benches, it’s a peaceful setting filled with colourful maples and beeches. The woods’ intimate size makes it easy to explore at a leisurely pace.


Tip: Bring boots as there are some muddy areas, there are a few routes around this woodland and a mini loop around the pond. The approach to the car park is very bumpy.

6. Winyards Gap, Chedington


Winyards Gap offers panoramic views over Dorset’s rolling countryside. During autumn, the patchwork of fields and trees glows in warm tones, creating a stunning landscape from the hilltop vantage point.


Tip: Stop by Winyards Gap Inn (also one of our recommended eateries) after your walk for a cozy meal, a perfect end to your scenic outing.

7. Bincombe Beeches Nature Reserve, Crewkerne


Surprisingly tranquil beauty not far from the centre of the market town Crewkerne. Bincombe Beeches is a beautiful woodland walk with two open grassy areas that afford you with outstanding views across the town and open countryside. It is extremely well looked after with benches to rest and if you look closely woodland animal sculptures.


Tip: Park at the top of Beechwood Drive for easy access
